Union members and advocates for labor rights converged on the streets of Mysuru on Wednesday to mark International Workers’ Day. The city witnessed a significant demonstration as various trade unions organized a massive rally to highlight the ongoing struggles of the working class and to demand better protections under national labor laws.
Unified Voice Against Labor Law Reforms
The primary focus of this year’s May Day celebrations in Mysuru was the vocal opposition to recent shifts in industrial policy. Protesters expressed deep concern over the consolidation of existing labor regulations into four new labor codes. Representatives from major organizations, including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), argued that these changes dilute the hard-won rights of the proletariat and favor corporate interests over employee welfare.
Participants marched through the city’s central business district, carrying red flags and banners while chanting slogans calling for fair wages, job security, and the strengthening of social security benefits. The rally served as a platform for workers from diverse sectors—ranging from manufacturing and construction to domestic work—to voice their shared grievances.
Demands for Fair Compensation and Social Security
In addition to protesting the new labor codes, the demonstrators highlighted the pressing need for a revised minimum wage that reflects the current cost of living. Speakers at the rally pointed out that inflation has significantly eroded the purchasing power of daily wage earners, leaving many families in financial distress.
Protecting the Informal Sector
A significant portion of the demonstration focused on the plight of “gig” workers and those in the unorganized sector. Advocates called for the government to implement comprehensive healthcare and pension schemes for these workers, who often operate without any formal contracts or safety nets. The rally concluded with a memorandum addressed to government officials, outlining a list of demands aimed at safeguarding the dignity and rights of the workforce in the changing economic landscape.
