A shocking incident of sexual violence has come to light within the Indian Railways network, as authorities confirmed the arrest of a railway staff member. A bedroll attendant was taken into custody following allegations that he raped a female passenger on a moving train. The incident, which has raised serious questions regarding the safety of women on long-distance trains, occurred in late April.
Incident Details on the Visakha Express
According to officials from the Government Railway Police (GRP), the assault reportedly took place on April 26 on board the Visakha Express. The victim, who was traveling on the express service, was allegedly targeted by a contractual staff member assigned to manage and distribute bedrolls to passengers in the air-conditioned coaches.
The Government Railway Police initiated an investigation immediately after the complaint was lodged. Through a swift operation, the accused was identified and apprehended. Preliminary reports suggest that the perpetrator used his access as a staff member to commit the crime under the cover of the night.
Concerns Over Passenger Safety
The arrest has once again put the spotlight on the security protocols involving contractual employees in the transport sector. While the Indian Railways has implemented various safety measures, including the ‘Meri Saheli’ initiative and increased CCTV surveillance at stations, incidents occurring inside the privacy of passenger coaches remain a significant challenge.
GRP Statement and Legal Action
A senior GRP official confirmed the arrest, stating that the accused is currently being interrogated. “We are committed to a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the survivor. The safety of passengers is our utmost priority, and such heinous acts will be met with the strictest legal consequences,” the official noted. The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and the railway administration is expected to take administrative action against the contractor responsible for hiring the attendant.
Following the ordeal, medical examinations were conducted, and the survivor’s statement has been recorded. Authorities are also reviewing passenger logs and witness testimonies from nearby berths to strengthen the case against the perpetrator.
