Andhra Pradesh is currently grappling with a severe heat emergency as temperatures soar across the state. Piduguralla, located in the Palnadu district, earned the unenviable distinction of being the hottest spot in the region, recording a blistering maximum temperature of 45.9°C. As the mercury continues its upward trajectory, officials are bracing for even more intense conditions in the coming days.
Heatwave Alert Issued for Dozens of Mandals
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has issued a critical warning for Thursday, May 2, predicting that at least 64 mandals across the state will experience full-blown heatwave conditions. The combo of high humidity and intense solar radiation has created a hazardous environment for residents, particularly those working outdoors.
Public health experts are advising citizens to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours and to stay hydrated. The state government has also instructed local administrations to ensure the availability of drinking water and medical facilities to treat potential cases of sunstroke and dehydration.
Isolated Rainfall Offers Limited Relief
While the heat remains the dominant headline, weather patterns show some signs of instability. The APSDMA has indicated that isolated pockets of the state may receive brief respite through light rainfall. Specifically, districts including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR), Parvathipuram Manyam, Visakhapatnam, Chittoor, and Tirupati are likely to witness scattered showers.
However, these rains often come with their own set of risks. “Light rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are expected at isolated places,” the APSDMA stated in its latest bulletin. Residents in these northern and southern tip districts have been cautioned to seek shelter during lightning activity to avoid accidents.
Agricultural Impacts and Outlook
The prolonged dry spell and extreme heat are also raising concerns among the farming community. While the pre-monsoon showers might help settle the dust and provide momentary cooling, they are insufficient to offset the high evaporation rates caused by the 45-degree heat. Meteorologists expect the dry and hot trend to persist for the remainder of the week, with only marginal fluctuations in temperature.
