As summer temperatures continue to climb, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department has entered a state of high alert. Following a significant surge in emergency reports throughout April, the department is implementing strict operational protocols to ensure public safety during the peak heat season.
Rapid Surge in Fire Emergencies
The urgency of the situation is underscored by recent data provided by the department. In the month of April alone, emergency teams responded to a staggering 2,386 fire-related calls. This influx of incidents has put a considerable strain on local resources, prompting leadership to streamline response mechanisms and maximize personnel availability.
According to In-charge Director General Venkata Ramana, the department is prioritizing rapid response times as the state grapples with dry conditions and rising mercury levels. The DG noted that the nature of these calls varies, but many are exacerbated by the combustible nature of vegetation and increased electrical loads during the summer months.
Strict Personnel Management Protocols
To combat the rising threat, the department has instituted a temporary freeze on personal leave for field staff. Under the new directive, leaves are only being sanctioned under exceptional and urgent circumstances. This “all hands on deck” approach is designed to ensure that every fire station across the state is fully manned and capable of deploying units at a moment’s notice.
Safety Advisory for the Public
Beyond internal readiness, fire officials are urging the public to exercise extreme caution. High temperatures often lead to an increase in short circuits and wildfires in rural areas. The department recommends that citizens inspect electrical wiring and avoid the outdoor burning of waste, which can quickly spiral out of control in windy or dry conditions.
“Our field staff have been advised to stay alert and maintain the highest level of vigilance,” stated DG Ramana. The department remains committed to minimizing property damage and preventing loss of life as the heatwave persists.
