Previously, many Indian passport holders were required to obtain an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) even if they did not plan to leave the international zone of the airport. Under the new regulations, Indian nationals can now transit through the international zone of any French airport without the need for this specific visa. This change aligns France with several other European nations seeking to attract more global commuters and strengthen bilateral ties with India.
Key Conditions and Eligibility
While the elimination of the transit visa is a major convenience, travelers must remain aware of certain limitations. The visa-free entry applies strictly to the international transit zone. This means travelers are not permitted to exit the airport, clear immigration, or enter the Schengen territory. If a traveler needs to change airports (for example, moving from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Orly) or has a long layover requiring a stay in a hotel outside the terminal, a standard Schengen visa remains mandatory.
Furthermore, this exemption is primarily aimed at those traveling to a final destination outside the Schengen zone. If an Indian national is traveling to another country within the Schengen Area, they must hold a valid short-stay visa as per the standard requirements.
