A Special Court in Bengaluru has delivered a significant ruling in the ongoing investigation into the Shivamogga ISIS conspiracy, sentencing a third individual to rigorous imprisonment. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) confirmed on Tuesday that the accused, identified as Reshaan Thajuddin Sheikh, has been sentenced to six years for his involvement in a terror-focused recruitment and radicalization network.
Court Findings and Sentencing
The Special Court for NIA cases found Sheikh guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). In addition to the six-year prison term, the court imposed a fine of ₹20,000. This judgment marks the third conviction in this specific case, highlighting the progress made by federal agencies in dismantling localized terror modules linked to global organizations.
According to the NIA’s investigation, Reshaan Thajuddin Sheikh played a pivotal role in a conspiracy aimed at furthering the agenda of the Islamic State (ISIS) within Indian borders. The agency highlighted that the module was actively engaged in activities designed to compromise the nation’s integrity and security.
Inside the Shivamogga Conspiracy
The case, which first came to light in 2022, centered on a group of radicalized individuals in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka. The NIA’s probe revealed that the conspirators had conducted trial blasts and were involved in procuring materials for explosive devices. They were also accused of radicalizing youth through digital platforms and encrypted messaging apps.
Reshaan Thajuddin Sheikh was specifically accused of collaborating with other key suspects to identify potential targets and raise funds for their operations. The agency stated that Sheikh, along with his associates, had pledged allegiance to the “Caliphate” and was working towards establishing an extremist foothold in the region.
A String of Convictions
This sentencing follows two previous convictions in the same case earlier this year. In those instances, the court also handed down rigorous imprisonment sentences, signaling a firm judicial stance against domestic terror conspiracies. The NIA has filed chargesheets against several other individuals linked to this module, and further trials are currently underway. This latest legal victory is seen as a major blow to the clandestine recruitment efforts of banned extremist outfits in southern India.
