In a breathtaking display of faith and cultural heritage, the ancient city of Madurai transformed into a sea of humanity on Monday morning as Lord Kallazhagar made his majestic entry into the Vaigai River. This pivotal event, the crown jewel of the annual Chithirai festival, drew hundreds of thousands of devotees who gathered along the riverbanks to witness the divine spectacle.
A Royal Procession in Green Silk
The ritualistic journey began in the early hours of the morning. Lord Kallazhagar, the presiding deity of the Alagar Hills, was adorned in resplendent green silk robes—a choice traditionally believed by devotees to signal prosperity and a bountiful harvest for the coming year. Mounted upon a shimmering golden horse vahanam, the deity was carried in a grand procession from the Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple at Tallakulam.
The atmosphere was electric with the sounds of traditional percussion and the rhythmic chanting of “Govinda! Govinda!” as the procession moved toward Alwarpuram. Security was tight, with thousands of police personnel managing the throngs of pilgrims who had traveled from across Tamil Nadu to catch a glimpse of the deity.
The Sacred Entry into the Vaigai
Precisely at 5:50 a.m., Lord Kallazhagar reached the Alwarpuram landing point of the Vaigai River. As the golden horse carrier entered the water, the crowd erupted in jubilation. According to local legend, this event reenacts Lord Kallazhagar’s arrival in Madurai to attend the wedding of his sister, Goddess Meenakshi, to Lord Sundareswarar, only to find he has arrived late.
Devotion Amidst Modern Management
State authorities and temple administrators worked in tandem to ensure the safety of the massive gathering. Water was released into the riverbed specifically for the ritual, ensuring the traditional sanctity of the immersion was maintained. Temporary shelters, medical camps, and drinking water stations were strategically placed to accommodate the influx of visitors, which officials estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.
The Chithirai festival remains one of the longest celebrated festivals in the world, seamlessly blending the traditions of Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Following the river entry, the deity will proceed to various mandagapadis (halting points) before beginning the return journey to his abode in the Alagar Hills.
