External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has characterized the growing partnership between India and the African continent as a critical force for international equilibrium. Speaking at the curtain-raiser for the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-IV), Jaishankar emphasized that this relationship serves as a beacon of “stability in a turbulent world,” marked by shifting geopolitical alliances and economic uncertainty.
Strengthening Strategic and Development Cooperation
The minister outlined the multifaceted nature of the Indo-African bond, which spans across infrastructure development, education, and healthcare. He noted that India’s approach to partnership is rooted in mutual respect and the prioritization of Africa’s own development goals. This “south-south cooperation” is seen as a model for how emerging economies can support one another without the baggage of traditional donor-recipient dynamics.
Engagement with Africa has remained a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy under the current administration. Jaishankar highlighted that India has extended significant Lines of Credit to various African nations, facilitating the construction of essential infrastructure and energy projects that empower local communities.
A Shared Vision for Global Governance
Beyond bilateral trade and aid, the External Affairs Minister pointed toward a shared strategic vision regarding global governance. Both India and African nations have frequently called for the democratization of international institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, to better reflect contemporary global realities.
The upcoming IAFS-IV summit is expected to be a landmark event, bringing together leaders to discuss food security, digital transformation, and green energy. Jaishankar suggested that as the world faces challenges ranging from climate change to supply chain disruptions, the India-Africa alliance provides a reliable framework for collaborative solutions.
