Andhra Pradesh is grappling with an intense early-season heatwave as temperatures soar across the state. On Monday, 47 mandals reported severe heatwave conditions, while an additional 128 mandals experienced standard heatwave levels. The Rayalaseema region bore the brunt of the scorching weather, with Kadapa recording the state’s highest temperature at a blistering 44.4°C.
Widespread Heat Affects Multiple Districts
The heat was not confined to Kadapa alone. Several other regions reported temperatures well above the seasonal average. Nandyal followed closely with a high of 44.1°C, while Kurnool and Anantapur recorded temperatures of 43.8°C and 43.1°C, respectively. Even the coastal belt felt the intensity, with Amaravati hitting 42.1°C and Tuni reaching 41.5°C. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum temperatures in many areas were three to five degrees Celsius higher than what is typically expected for late April.
Disturbing Forecast for the Week Ahead
The state government and disaster management authorities have issued urgent warnings as the trend is expected to continue. Forecasts for Tuesday, April 23, indicate that 95 mandals could face severe heatwave conditions, with another 159 mandals likely to experience moderate heatwaves. This spike in temperature poses significant health risks, particularly for outdoor workers, children, and the elderly.
Potential Respite from Thunderstorms
While the heat remains the primary concern, the IMD has also noted that atmospheric instability could lead to localized weather changes. Isolated pockets of Andhra Pradesh may see light rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph until April 25. However, experts warn that these brief spells of rain may not be enough to significantly lower the ground temperature or provide long-term relief from the prevailing dry heat.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and keep a close watch on weather updates provided by the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA).
