Labor tensions in Telangana have reached a critical juncture as the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) Joint Action Committee (JAC) announced it will proceed with a planned strike. The decision follows the collapse of high-stakes negotiations between union leaders and government representatives on Tuesday, leaving the state’s public transport future in a state of uncertainty.
Stalemate Over Long-Standing Grievances
The discussions were intended to address a suite of unresolved demands that have been brewing within the corporation for months. Key grievances presented by the JAC include the implementation of long-overdue pay revisions, staff welfare initiatives, and the formal merger of corporation employees with the Telangana state government. Additionally, the committee raised concerns regarding the procurement of new buses and the ongoing integration of electric vehicles into the state fleet.
One of the most contentious points remains the holding of union elections. Employees argue that without formal representation and democratic processes within the corporation, their voices regarding operational changes and labor rights are being ignored.
Government Requests Delays, Unions Demand Action
During the meeting, government officials requested a four-week grace period. This time was intended for a dedicated committee of bureaucrats to examine the feasibility of the JAC’s demands and draft a comprehensive report. However, union leaders rejected this proposal, viewing it as a stalling tactic rather than a commitment to reform.
Operational Concerns and Privatization Fears
The JAC has also been vocal about the strategic direction of the TGSRTC. Specifically, the union is seeking clarity on how electric buses are being operated and whether the current procurement models threaten the job security of existing staff. The push for a merger with the state government is seen by many workers as the only way to ensure long-term financial stability and parity with other government departments.
With no middle ground found during Tuesday’s talks, the JAC has reiterated its intent to mobilize workers for industrial action. Commuters across the state may face significant disruptions if a resolution is not reached before the strike commences. For now, the ball remains in the government’s court to offer a more immediate solution to avoid a total shutdown of public transport services.
