Commuters in Bengaluru are advised to plan alternative routes as the city traffic police have announced a total ban on vehicle movement on the Peenya Flyover (Dr. Shivakumar Swamiji Flyover) on Tumakuru Road. The closure is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. on May 5 and will remain in effect until 11 p.m. on May 8. This temporary suspension of traffic is essential to facilitate critical load testing on the structure.
Infrastructure Safety and Testing Protocols
The decision to close the Busy stretch follows recommendations from technical experts and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The load testing is a mandatory safety procedure designed to evaluate the structural integrity of the flyover, which serves as a vital artery for vehicles traveling toward northern Karnataka. During these three days, engineers will monitor the bridge’s response to heavy weights to ensure it remains safe for long-term public use.
Traffic Diversion Plan
To mitigate the impact of the closure, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have institutionalized a comprehensive diversion plan for all types of vehicles. Motorists heading toward the city or moving outbound toward Nelamangala must use the surface roads adjacent to the flyover (Tumakuru Road).
Alternative Routes for Outbound Traffic
Vehicles traveling from the Goraguntepalya side toward Nelamangala are instructed to stay on the service road alongside the flyover. Traffic will be funneled through the SRS Circle and Peenya Police Station junctions to rejoin the highway further down.
Inbound Routes for Commuters
For those entering the city from the Nelamangala side, traffic will be diverted toward the service road at the Parle-G toll plaza. Commuters will then navigate through Jalahalli Cross to reach Goraguntepalya. Authorities have cautioned that significant congestion is expected on these service roads and have urged the public to consider using the metro or alternative peripheral roads where possible.
The NHAI has emphasized that these tests are crucial following previous maintenance work on the flyover’s prestressed cables. Regular updates will be provided via traffic police social media handles to keep the public informed of any changes to the schedule.
