This technological leap aims to end the long-standing frustration of traffic congestion at traditional toll plazas, allowing vehicles to maintain highway speeds while payments are processed automatically.
How the Barrier-Free System Operates
Unlike the traditional FASTag system that requires vehicles to slow down or stop for scanners to read a windshield tag, this new “Open Road Tolling” framework utilizes high-speed cameras and advanced sensors. As vehicles transit through designated overhead gantries, the system captures registration details and initiates a digital transaction in real-time. This ensures a seamless flow of traffic, significantly reducing travel time between major hubs connected by the NH-48 corridor.
A Shift from Physical Barriers to Digital Precision
The implementation on NH-48 serves as a pilot for a wider national rollout. By removing physical booms and barriers, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) expects a sharp decrease in fuel wastage and carbon emissions caused by idling engines. The system integrates satellite-based tracking and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to ensure high accuracy in billing, even for vehicles traveling at speeds exceeding 100 km/h.

For daily commuters and logistics operators, the benefits are immediate. The NH-48 is a critical artery for India’s economy, and the removal of bottlenecks is expected to lower operational costs for freight transport. Authorities have confirmed that existing FASTag accounts will remain the primary source for funds, but the transition to GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) based tolling is the ultimate goal of this initiative.
While the system offers convenience, the government has also introduced strict enforcement measures for non-payment. Vehicles with invalid tags or insufficient balances will be flagged through the ANPR network, with penalties integrated directly into the parivahan database.
