According to the latest data for the fiscal year 2024-25, the state’s law enforcement agencies successfully retrieved and returned more than 53,000 mobile handsets to their rightful owners, highlighting the effectiveness of modern tracking infrastructure.
Advanced Surveillance and CEIR Integration
The high recovery rate is largely credited to the state’s aggressive integration of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system. By streamlining the reporting process through online portals and localized tracking cells, Gujarat Police have significantly reduced the turnaround time between a reported theft and the recovery of the device.
Officials noted that the recovery of these 53,000 devices represents not just a logistical success, but a major step in curbing the black market for stolen electronics. Mobile phones are frequently used in more serious criminal activities, and by recovering them quickly, the police are effectively neutralizing potential tools for cybercrime and fraud.
A Nationwide Leader in Tech-Driven Policing
Ranking only behind a few other major states, Gujarat’s performance underscores its commitment to “Tech-First” policing. Each district in the state has established dedicated “Lost Property Units” that focus specifically on digital assets. This specialized focus ensures that even small-scale thefts are prioritized, fostering greater public trust in the department.
How Citizens Can Protect Their Devices
Following this success, the Gujarat Police have issued a fresh advisory to citizens to ensure their devices are recoverable in the event of loss. They emphasize the importance of noting down IMEI numbers and reporting any loss immediately via the national portal. The police also highlighted that a significant portion of the recovered phones were found across state lines, demonstrating the robust interstate coordination now in play.
As the current fiscal year continues, the department aims to further improve its ranking by implementing AI-driven predictive tracking and expanding its public outreach programs to educate users on device security features.
