The political climate in Ladakh remains tense as the Congress party launched a sharp critique of Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to the region. Silence on Statehood and Constitutional Safeguards
While the Home Minister participated in events surrounding the Piprahwa relics, the opposition highlighted a perceived disconnect between government activities and the local population’s aspirations. Taking to social media platform X, Jairam Ramesh argued that the Union Government is ignoring a growing movement within the Union Territory that seeks greater self-governance.
“The HM is in Ladakh today basking in the glory of the Piprahwa relics, while remaining silent on the demands of the people there for Statehood, Sixth Schedule status, and protection of land and employment,” Ramesh stated, emphasizing the contrast between the ceremonial nature of the visit and the underlying political friction.
The Core Demands: Sixth Schedule and Employment Protection
The residents of Ladakh have been increasingly vocal about four primary demands following the 2019 reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the transition to a Union Territory, local leaders and activists have united under the banner of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).

- Full Statehood: A shift from Union Territory status to a full-fledged state with its own legislature.
