Air travel between Southern India and Australia is set to face a temporary disruption as Qantas Airways announced a short-term suspension of its direct flight services between Bengaluru (BLR) and Sydney (SYD). The route, which has become a vital link for IT professionals and students, will be paused for approximately two months starting in mid-August.
Operational Adjustments Drive Temporary Halt
The suspension is scheduled to begin on August 14 and is expected to conclude on October 26, 2024. According to industry sources, the decision stems from scheduled maintenance requirements and operational restructuring within the airline’s long-haul fleet. During this period, travelers flying from Kempegowda International Airport will need to look for alternative hubs to reach New South Wales.
Qantas currently operates the route using its Airbus A330 aircraft, offering four weekly services. The route was launched with much fanfare in 2022, marking the first direct connection between Southern India and Australia, significantly reducing travel time for passengers who previously had to transit through Southeast Asian hubs like Singapore or Bangkok.

The hiatus coincides with a period of steady demand, though it falls outside the peak December travel season. Passengers who have already secured bookings for travel during these dates are being contacted by the airline. Qantas is reportedly offering alternative flight paths, likely involving codeshare partners or routing via Melbourne, where other services remain active. Retiming and full refunds are also being made available for those impacted by the schedule change.

Despite the temporary setback, travel analysts suggest that the long-term outlook for this corridor remains strong. “The Bengaluru-Sydney route has shown exceptional load factors since its inception,” says a local travel consultant. “While maintenance cycles are a standard part of aviation logistics, the temporary absence of this non-stop flight will likely see a spike in fares on connecting routes during these ten weeks.”
