Dining out in India’s tech hub is set to become significantly more expensive as Bengaluru’s hotel and restaurant industry grapples with an aggressive spike in operational costs. Within just two months, the price of a commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder has surged from ₹2,162 to a staggering ₹3,152, marking a historical price jump that has caught many business owners off guard.
Rapid Cost Escalations Hit Hospitality Sector
The sudden financial burden is the result of a compounding series of price hikes. Over the past 60 days, commercial gas rates have been revised upward three times in the city. Compounding the issue further, a previously available discount of ₹150 was recently withdrawn, leading to an overall cost increase of more than 70% in a remarkably short timeframe.
Industry experts suggest that this level of volatility is unprecedented. While seasonal fluctuations are common, the magnitude of a nearly ₹1,000 increase in such a concentrated period has left restaurateurs with little choice but to transfer the burden to the consumer.
Menu Adjustments Inevitable for Local Eateries
For many Bengaluru hotels and restaurants, fuel costs represent a significant portion of their monthly overhead. The Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels Association has indicated that members are currently evaluating their pricing models. While most establishments have tried to absorb minor fluctuations in the past, the current 70% hike threatens the viability of small and medium-sized “Darshinis” and premium dining outlets alike.
Impact on the Common Man
Regular patrons can expect to see a 10% to 15% increase in the price of breakfast items, meals, and beverages in the coming weeks. The hike is expected to affect everything from the humble idli-vada to high-end multi-cuisine dishes. Industry leaders note that besides gas prices, the rising costs of essential commodities like edible oil and vegetables have already been squeezing margins, making this latest energy price hike the “final blow.”
As the city prepares for these adjustments, business owners are calling for government intervention or more stable pricing mechanisms to prevent further disruption to the hospitality sector, which is a major employer in the region.
