In a proactive move to address a worrying spike in employee mortality, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has announced a mandatory health screening initiative for its entire workforce. The decision follows alarming data revealing that nearly 300 employees passed away within the last year, many due to lifestyle-related diseases exacerbated by the high-stress nature of the transport industry.
Addressing High Mortality Rates Among Staff
Top officials within the APSRTC expressed deep concern over the recent loss of life, noting that the physical and mental rigors of operating long-haul routes and managing public transport took a significant toll on staff health. To combat this, the corporation has updated its medical protocols. While medical examinations were previously conducted annually or biennially depending on age, the new mandate requires drivers and conductors to undergo comprehensive check-ups every six months.
Focus on Preventive Healthcare
The revised health policy aims to identify early warning signs of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues—common ailments among transit workers who often endure irregular sleep patterns and sedentary working hours. By increasing the frequency of these screenings, the APSRTC hopes to offer timely medical intervention and reduce the number of sudden deaths on or off the job.
Improving Safety for Both Staff and Passengers
Beyond the welfare of the employees, the corporation emphasizes that the health of its drivers is a critical component of public safety. “Ensuring our drivers are in peak physical condition is paramount for the safety of the millions of passengers who rely on us daily,” a senior official stated. The initiative will also include counseling sessions aimed at stress management and the promotion of a balanced diet, tailored specifically for those on the move.
The rollout of these medical camps will begin immediately across all depots in the state. Local administration units have been directed to collaborate with empanelled hospitals to facilitate smooth testing and follow-up care for any staff members diagnosed with high-risk conditions.
