The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has apprehended a field operative of a power distribution company in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district for allegedly accepting a massive bribe. The operation, which took place on Tuesday, highlights ongoing efforts to curb systemic corruption within public utility services.
Caught in the Act: The Trap in Nellore
ACB officials reported that a lineman working for Southern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited (APSPDCL) was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹1 lakh. The suspect, identified as an employee serving the local power distribution network, was apprehended during a carefully coordinated sting operation following a complaint from a local resident.
According to investigators, the bribe was demanded in exchange for facilitating a service connection transfer and the physical shifting of an electrical transformer. These administrative and technical tasks, which are meant to follow standard government procedures, were allegedly being held hostage by the official for personal financial gain.
A Pattern of Extortion
The investigation has revealed that the ₹1 lakh caught during the trap was only a fraction of the total amount extorted. ACB officials stated that the accused had already collected approximately ₹4.90 lakh from the complainant in previous installments. Despite this significant payout, the lineman continued to demand additional funds to complete the requested work, prompting the victim to approach the anti-corruption authorities.
“The accused officer showed blatant disregard for the law by repeatedly demanding money for services that are part of his official duties,” an ACB spokesperson stated. “The recovery of the marked currency notes during the trap provides strong evidence for the prosecution.”
Legal Consequences and Next Steps
Following the arrest, the ACB conducted searches at locations associated with the lineman to determine if there are further undisclosed assets or patterns of corruption. The official has been taken into custody and will be produced before the Special Court for ACB cases. The bureau has urged citizens to report any instances of bribery or harassment by public officials, promising anonymity and swift action against those misusing their positions of power.
