Commuters traveling between Mumbai and Pune should prepare for significant delays as authorities have announced a temporary closure of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway scheduled for today and tomorrow. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has implemented this block to facilitate essential infrastructure work and safety maintenance along one of India’s busiest arterial routes.
Planned Closures: Dates and Timings
The traffic suspension is scheduled to last for approximately three hours on both days. According to official notifications, the expressway will be inaccessible to through-traffic during a specific afternoon window. The closure is primarily aimed at installing overhead gantries and conducting safety inspections of rockfall mitigation systems near the Khandala ghat section.
MSRDC officials confirmed that while the block is necessary, they have timed it to avoid the peak morning and evening rush hours to minimize public inconvenience. However, heavy vehicle operators and regular commuters are advised to adjust their departure times accordingly.
Recommended Alternate Routes
To ensure the continued flow of traffic, the Highway Traffic Police have suggested several diversions for light and heavy motor vehicles:
- Old Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH 48): The most common alternative for vehicles traveling toward Pune. Drivers can exit the expressway at the Khopoli or Lonavala exit points and rejoin after the construction zone.
- For Light Vehicles: Small cars can divert through the Lonavala city route via the Magic Point, though congestion is expected within the hill station’s narrow roads.
- Heavy Vehicles: Trucks and multi-axle trailers are advised to halt at designated parking lots or food malls before the block begins to prevent bottlenecking at the diversion points.

Authorities have deployed additional personnel at various entry and exit points to manage the diverted traffic stream. “We urge motorists to exercise patience and follow the instructions provided by the traffic wardens on site,” a spokesperson for the highway police stated.
