Law enforcement authorities in Bengaluru have launched an investigation into a sophisticated cybercrime involving the impersonation of a high-ranking civic official. The Bengaluru City Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) following reports that an unidentified individual was masquerading as the Zonal Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) East Zone on the messaging platform WhatsApp.
Fraudsters Target Civic Administration
The deception came to light when several officials and staff members within the BBMP reported receiving messages from a WhatsApp account displaying the name and official photograph of the East Zone Commissioner. The perpetrator utilized the official’s identity to establish a sense of urgency and authority, a common tactic used in “vishing” or “whaling” attacks targeting corporate and government structures.
According to police sources, the fraudster attempted to solicit sensitive information and potentially financial favors from subordinates by leveraging the high profile of the Zonal Commissioner’s office. The BBMP East Zone is a critical administrative hub, making the breach of its leadership’s digital identity a significant security concern for the city’s municipal corporation.
Police Response and Cyber Security Warning
Upon discovering the profile, the aggrieved official promptly alerted the cybercrime wing. The police have registered the case under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code, focusing on identity theft and cheating by personation.
Protecting Against Impersonation Scams
Cybersecurity experts warn that these “executive impersonation” scams are becoming increasingly prevalent. Hackers often scrape publicly available images from government websites or social media platforms like LinkedIn to create convincing fake profiles. Authorities have urged government employees and the general public to follow these safety protocols:
- Verify Identity: Always confirm the identity of a superior via a secondary, trusted communication channel before sharing data or funds.
- Check Contact Details: Scrutinize the phone number behind the profile; fraudsters often hide behind international or unrecognized numbers.
- Report Suspicious Activity: Immediately notify IT departments or the police if a high-ranking official makes unusual or unsolicited requests via instant messaging.
The investigation is currently ongoing as digital forensic teams work to trace the IP address and origin of the fraudulent WhatsApp account. No arrests have been made at this stage, but police remain optimistic about tracking the digital footprint left by the perpetrator.
