The gang, which operated under the guise of official Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) technicians, was apprehended following a targeted investigation into a series of tower thefts across the city.
Deceptive Tactics and Modus Operandi
The criminal group employed a bold strategy to evade suspicion from local residents and security personnel. Dressed in formal attire and carrying forged identification documents, members of the gang would approach cellular towers claiming to be on official maintenance duty for BSNL. By mimicking the professional behavior of utility workers, they were able to dismantle and remove expensive hardware in broad daylight without raising alarms.
According to police reports, the investigation gained momentum after several network providers reported sudden, unexplained outages and missing hardware from their installations. “The suspects took advantage of the public’s trust in utility workers. Their professional appearance allowed them to operate unchallenged in several residential areas,” a senior police official stated during the press briefing.
Recovery of Stolen Assets
Following a series of coordinated raids, Bengaluru police successfully recovered a substantial cache of stolen equipment. The seized items, which include Remote Radio Units (RRUs) and other critical networking components, are estimated to have a market value of approximately ₹7 lakh. These components are essential for maintaining mobile network connectivity and are frequently targeted by black-market electronic resellers.

Preliminary questioning of the detained suspects has revealed a network that extends beyond Karnataka’s borders. The gang is believed to have been involved in similar thefts in neighboring states, suggesting a well-organized supply chain for the stolen telecommunications gear.
