As Tamil Nadu prepares for a pivotal election day, the state’s electoral machinery has swung into full gear. On Monday, the Election Commission oversaw the massive logistical feat of deploying more than 3.4 lakh election officials and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to tens of thousands of polling stations located throughout the state.
Massive Mobilization Across 75,000 Polling Booths
In total, 3,60,068 polling personnel have been assigned to cover 75,000 booths to ensure a smooth and efficient voting process. This workforce includes presiding officers, polling assistants, and security personnel who are tasked with maintaining order and assisting the millions of citizens expected to exercise their democratic rights. According to official reports, the transport of the EVMs and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines was conducted under tight security to prevent any tampering or unauthorized access.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik confirmed that all essential supplies, including indelible ink, electoral rolls, and stationery, reached their respective destinations by late Monday evening. Special provisions have also been made at several booths to prioritize access for elderly voters and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), including the provision of ramps and wheelchairs.
Strict Monitoring of Social Media Violations
While the physical logistics are being managed on the ground, the Election Commission is also keeping a vigilant eye on the digital landscape. CEO Patnaik revealed that authorities have intensified their monitoring of online platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation and the violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
As of the start of polling day, the CEO confirmed that 163 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against individuals and entities for social media posts that breached election protocols. These violations range from the dissemination of hate speech and unauthorized political advertisements to the spreading of false news intended to influence voters. Patnaik emphasized that the commission maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward any activity that could compromise the integrity or fairness of the electoral process.
Preparation for High Voter Turnout
Local administrations have been instructed to ensure that basic amenities, such as drinking water and shaded waiting areas, are available at all polling centers given the prevailing weather conditions. With high security in place and a massive administrative team on the ground, Tamil Nadu is set for a significant democratic exercise today.
