The newly appointed leadership of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TNSCPCR) has received a resounding vote of confidence from the state government. During a high-level meeting on Wednesday, Geetha Jeevan, the Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, formally met with the commission’s new Chairperson, A.S. Kumari, and her team of members to outline the state’s vision for child safety.
Strengthening Child Welfare Infrastructure
In the meeting held at the Secretariat, Minister Jeevan emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for every child in the state. She assured the commission that the government would provide “full support and necessary resources” to facilitate their oversight duties. The discussion centered on identifying immediate priorities for the commission, which acts as a statutory watchdog to monitor the implementation of various child rights laws.
The TNSCPCR is tasked with examining and reviewing the safeguards provided by or under any law for the time being in force for the protection of child rights. Minister Jeevan highlighted the importance of proactive measures in preventing child labor, ensuring the right to education, and strictly enforcing the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences).
Collaborative Approach to Advocacy
The Minister urged the new Chairperson and the appointed members to work in close coordination with district-level authorities and non-governmental organizations. By fostering a collaborative ecosystem, the commission can more effectively address grievances and respond to emergencies involving minors. The team was encouraged to conduct regular inspections of child care institutions and residential schools to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
A.S. Kumari, who recently took over the mantle, expressed her gratitude for the government’s backing. She noted that with the state’s support, the commission aims to bridge the gap between policy and implementation, ensuring that welfare schemes reach the most vulnerable children in rural and urban areas alike.
