The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has formally raised alarms regarding the potential disenfranchisement of nearly a million citizens across Odisha. In a high-level meeting with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), party representatives expressed deep concern over the removal of 9.8 lakh names from the electoral rolls, a move occurring just ahead of the upcoming Special Internal Revision (SIR).
BJD Demands Scrutiny of Voter Deletions
In a memorandum submitted to the state’s election authorities, the BJD highlighted the scale of the deletions as a significant threat to democratic participation. The party leadership argued that while routine maintenance of voter lists is necessary to remove deceased or relocated individuals, the sheer volume of these recent removals necessitates a more transparent and rigorous verification process.
The party urged the CEO to implement a manual verification safety net to ensure that legitimate voters have not been purged due to clerical errors or technical glitches. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, and we cannot allow nearly ten lakh people to lose their voice due to administrative oversights,” a party spokesperson stated following the meeting.
Call for “Special Care” During Revision
The BJD delegation specifically requested that the Election Commission take “special care” during the Special Internal Revision period. They proposed that booth-level officers (BLOs) be mandated to conduct physical door-to-door verifications specifically for the names flagged for deletion. The party expressed fears that many of these individuals might only realize they have been removed from the rolls on election day, at which point it would be too late to rectify the error.
Focus on Transparency and Inclusion
Beyond the deletions, the BJD also emphasized the need for better communication strategies to inform the public about the revision process. By ensuring that every eligible citizen is registered and that no valid voter is unfairly excluded, the party believes the integrity of the upcoming electoral process can be maintained. The Chief Electoral Officer has reportedly assured the delegation that all complaints will be reviewed and that the revision process will adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Election Commission of India.
