In a decisive move to bolster road safety within the region, Tirupati District Collector S. Venkateswar has officially identified 48 high-risk “black spots” across the district’s extensive highway network. The announcement came following a comprehensive field inspection of several critical road stretches, where recurring accidents have historically claimed lives and caused significant injuries.
Immediate Intervention Planned for High-Risk Zones
The District Collector has issued a firm directive to transport and engineering departments to rectify these hazardous locations within a strict 60-day window. During his inspection, Mr. Venkateswar emphasized that the safety of commuters is a top priority, noting that infrastructural flaws at these specific sites are major contributors to the district’s accident rates.
The identified black spots include sharp curves, poorly lit junctions, and areas lacking adequate signage or speed breakers. By addressing these technical shortcomings, officials aim to drastically reduce the frequency of road mishaps that have plagued these highway corridors.
Collaborative Efforts for Road Safety
The remediation process will involve a multi-agency approach, coordinating efforts between the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, and the local police force. The plan includes the installation of high-visibility warning signs, the improvement of road surface quality, and the strategic placement of solar-powered blinkers at dangerous intersections.
Collector Venkateswar noted that the 60-day timeline is non-negotiable, and periodic reviews will be conducted to track the progress of the safety enhancements. “Our goal is to ensure that every motorist traveling through Tirupati district feels secure. Correcting these 48 locations is the first major step in creating a zero-accident corridor,” the Collector stated during the site visit.
Public Awareness and Enforcement
Beyond physical road improvements, the administration is also looking at stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. Authorities are considering increased patrolling in these identified zones to curb over-speeding and reckless driving, which often exacerbate the dangers posed by poor road geometry. The district administration has also urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to speed limits, especially while navigating the newly identified high-risk zones.
