In a significant move to boost regional infrastructure and social welfare, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited Gundlupet on Tuesday to launch a series of development initiatives valued at ₹523 crore. The Chief Minister used the platform to highlight the Congress party’s historical commitment to gender equality while laying the foundation for projects aimed at transforming the local landscape.
Infrastructure and Welfare at the Forefront
The extensive development package includes a mix of new project inaugurations and foundation stone-laying ceremonies. These initiatives span various sectors, including irrigation, rural road connectivity, and community infrastructure. Local leaders emphasized that this investment represents one of the most substantial financial injections the Gundlupet region has seen in recent years, aimed at addressing long-standing public needs.
During his address to the gathered crowds, Siddaramaiah reiterated that his government remains focused on “pro-people” governance. He noted that the funds allocated would prioritize drinking water projects and the modernization of local educational institutions, ensuring that the benefits of the state’s economic growth reach the grassroots level.
Congress and the Women’s Reservation Bill
Beyond the local infrastructure projects, the Chief Minister addressed broader political themes, specifically focusing on the empowerment of women. Siddaramaiah asserted that the Congress party has always been the primary advocate for women’s political representation in India. He pointed to the party’s historical role in pushing for the Women’s Reservation Bill, which seeks to reserve 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies for women.
“The Congress party has never wavered in its support for the women’s quota,” the Chief Minister stated. He criticized political opponents for delay tactics, arguing that if the Congress-led government’s earlier initiatives had been fully supported, women would have achieved higher levels of representation in legislative bodies much sooner.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Siddaramaiah linked the current state-level “guarantee schemes”—such as the Shakthi scheme for free bus travel and the Gruha Lakshmi scheme providing monthly financial aid to female heads of households—to this larger vision of empowerment. He argued that these economic measures are the necessary foundation upon which political representation must be built.
The visit concluded with the Chief Minister urging local officials to ensure the timely completion of the newly announced projects. Government representatives stated that the ₹523 crore investment would not only improve quality of life but also stimulate local employment through construction and maintenance activities.
