Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Tuesday that the Karnataka state government has officially fulfilled its commitment to the families of those who perished in the Chamarajanagar district hospital oxygen crisis. Highlighting the administration’s “humanitarian approach,” Shivakumar confirmed that government employment has been provided to the next of kin of the victims, marking a significant step in the state’s compensation efforts.
Addressing a Pandemic Tragedy
The incident, which occurred during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, saw 24 individuals lose their lives due to a critical shortage of medical oxygen. The tragedy sparked national outrage and led to prolonged legal and political battles over accountability and reparations. Speaking to the media, Shivakumar emphasized that while lives cannot be replaced, providing stable employment offers a “lifeline” to families that lost their primary breadwinners.
The Deputy Chief Minister noted that the Congress government prioritized this issue immediately upon taking office. “We promised the people that we would stand by those who suffered due to administrative failures during the pandemic. By handing over these job orders, we are demonstrating that our government keeps its word,” Shivakumar stated.
