In a significant boost to public confidence in digital surveillance and law enforcement, the Sri Sathya Sai district police successfully recovered and returned 135 missing or stolen mobile handsets to their rightful owners this week. The recovery operation, valued at several lakhs of rupees, was made possible through the intensive use of the Mobile Tracking System and specialized technical wings within the department.
Advanced Tracking Technology Nets Success
The Superintendent of Police for Sri Sathya Sai district led the handover ceremony, emphasizing that the recovery was the result of a coordinated effort using various digital tools, including the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. Families and individuals who had lost their devices gathered at the district headquarters to reclaim their property, many expressing relief after months of uncertainty.
According to police officials, the majority of these devices were tracked down after being reported lost in various parts of the district. The technical team monitored the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of the reported handsets, flagging them as soon as new SIM cards were inserted or the devices were activated on any network.
A Crackdown on Electronic Theft
This initiative is part of an ongoing drive to curb mobile snatching and the illegal resale of electronic gadgets. The Superintendent urged citizens to remain vigilant and immediately report any loss of mobile devices through the official portals. “The prompt filing of a complaint is crucial for our technical teams to begin the tracking process effectively,” the SP noted during the press briefing.
The police also issued a warning to the public against purchasing second-hand mobile phones from unverified sources or without proper billing, as these devices could potentially be linked to criminal activities. The department plans to continue these periodic handover events to ensure that recovered property reaches citizens in a timely manner.
Public Encouraged to Use Recovery Portals
District authorities highlighted that the integration of the CEIR portal has been a game-changer for local law enforcement. By blocking the device globally, the portal makes stolen phones useless to thieves, thereby reducing the incentive for theft. Residents were encouraged to keep a record of their IMEI numbers and use the department’s dedicated WhatsApp helpline or the nearest police station for reporting grievances.
