A 63-year-old resident of Pune has become the latest victim in a rising wave of cybercrime, losing approximately ₹31.78 lakh to a sophisticated online insurance scam. The fraud, which unfolded over several weeks, involved perpetrators posing as legitimate insurance officials to gain the victim’s trust.
Deceptive Tactics and False Promises
According to local law enforcement, the ordeal began when the senior citizen received a series of unsolicited phone calls. The fraudsters systematically introduced themselves as representatives from a well-known insurance provider. Using a combination of professional jargon and high-pressure sales tactics, they convinced the victim that he was eligible for significant returns on his existing policies.
The scammers claimed that by paying specific “processing fees” and “administrative charges,” the victim would unlock a substantial maturity amount. Believing the callers were genuine, the senior citizen began transferring funds into various bank accounts provided by the suspects. Between the months of September and November, the victim made multiple transactions, totaling ₹31,78,000.
The Discovery of the Fraud
The victim only realized he had been deceived when the promised returns failed to materialize and the “agents” began demanding even more money for “tax clearances.” Upon contacting the actual insurance company, he discovered that no such officials existed and no such bonuses were pending. The realization prompted him to approach the Cyber Crime Cell of the Pune Police to report the theft.
Rising Vigilance Against Cybercrime
Authorities have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Investigating officers are currently tracking the digital footprints of the transactions and monitoring the bank accounts used to siphon the money. Police officials have issued a stern warning to the public, particularly retirees, to remain cautious of unsolicited calls offering financial windfalls.
Experts advise that any communication regarding insurance policies should be verified through the official website or physical branch of the provider. Citizens are urged to never share sensitive banking information or transfer funds to personal bank accounts under the guise of official fees.
