Government authorities in Hyderabad have intensified their efforts to reclaim public spaces and restore historical water bodies. On Saturday, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection and Monitoring Agency (HYDRAA) executed a targeted demolition and cleanup operation at the temple pond located in Jagadgiri Gutta.
The intervention was spurred by growing concerns over the gradual disappearance of the pond due to illegal encroachments. Over recent years, unauthorized temporary structures and fences had begun to hem in the water body, restricting public access and contributing to the degradation of the local ecosystem. HYDRAA officials arrived at the site with heavy machinery to dismantle these illegal additions, clearing the way for a comprehensive restoration of the pond’s original boundaries.
Restoring Ecological and Religious Significance
Beyond the removal of physical barriers, the agency focused on the long-term health of the pond. A significant portion of the day’s operations involved de-silting the basin. Years of neglect and urban runoff had led to a thick accumulation of sludge, which reduced the pond’s water-holding capacity and affected its cleanliness. By clearing this debris, the agency aims to replenish the groundwater table and provide a cleaner ritual space for the surrounding community.
Local residents have long associated the pond with the nearby temple, using it for various cultural and religious ceremonies. The encroachment had not only become an eyesore but also a point of contention for devotees who felt the sanctity of the site was being compromised. HYDRAA’s swift action was met with relief from community leaders who had previously petitioned for the site’s protection.

This operation is part of a larger, ongoing initiative by HYDRAA to safeguard the city’s water resources. In recent months, the agency has been aggressively identifying and reclaiming buffer zones around lakes and kunthas (ponds) that have been usurped by private developers or local encroachers.
Officials stated that the drive at Jagadgiri Gutta serves as a warning to those occupying government land or ecologically sensitive zones. Following the demolition and de-silting, the agency plans to fence off the area to prevent future land grabs and explore landscaping options to turn the pond into a sustainable urban lung space.
