Tensions in Thiruvananthapuram reached a boiling point this week as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a dual strategy of legal action and grassroots demonstrations following a violent confrontation in Nettayam. Former Director General of Police (DGP) and recent BJP inductee R. Sreelekha has taken a leading role in the outcry, condemning the local police force’s conduct during the incident.
Allegations of Police Misconduct
The controversy stems from a clash in the Nettayam region, where BJP activists and law enforcement reportedly engaged in a heated physical exchange. High-ranking party officials allege that officers acted with bias and used excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. R. Sreelekha, who transitioned from a high-profile career in law enforcement to politics, criticized her former colleagues, stating that the party will not back down until the officers involved are held accountable.
Speaking to party members and the media, Sreelekha emphasized that the current administration is using the police force as a tool for political suppression. She noted that the BJP is prepared to escalate the matter through formal legal channels to ensure that departmental inquiries are launched against the accused personnel.
Demands for Independent Inquiry
The BJP’s Kerala state leadership has outlined a series of demands, including the immediate suspension of the officers present during the Nettayam clash. They argue that the police failed to maintain neutrality and instead targeted BJP workers during the altercation. The party has warned that if the state government does not initiate a transparent investigation, they will paralyze local administrative functions through a series of “strong protests.”

Beyond the legal framework, the party plans to mobilize its youth and women’s wings to sustain pressure on the Thiruvananthapuram city police commissionerate. Local leaders have hinted at a district-wide strike if their grievances remain unaddressed by the end of the week.
While the police department has yet to release a detailed rebuttal, sources within the force suggest that the intervention was necessary to maintain public order and prevent the situation in Nettayam from spiraling into further violence.
