In a powerful tribute to the 12th-century social reformer Basaveshwara, Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Marithibbe Gowda emphasized that the philosopher’s teachings remain the cornerstone for a just and equitable society. Speaking at a recent commemorative event, the legislator highlighted how the principles of ‘Kayakave Kailasa’ (Work is Worship) and social equality continue to drive modern progress.
The Timeless Relevance of Basavanna’s Vision
Basaveshwara, popularly known as Basavanna, was an instrumental figure in the Bhakti movement, advocating for a society free from caste-based discrimination and gender inequality. Gowda noted that while centuries have passed since Basavanna founded the Anubhava Mantapa—often cited as one of the world’s first parliaments—his vision for democratic participation and individual dignity is more relevant today than ever before.
The MLC argued that the current socio-political landscape requires a return to these foundational ethics. He pointed out that the philosopher’s rejection of ritualistic traditions in favor of practical morality helped bridge the gap between different strata of society, a mission that modern governance still strives to achieve.
Promoting Equality Through Education and Labor
One of the key aspects discussed during the gathering was the concept of labor. Basavanna’s philosophy elevated the status of physical work, suggesting that spiritual salvation is found through honest labor rather than renunciation. Gowda urged the younger generation to internalize these values to build a self-reliant nation.
Upholding the Vachana Literature
The legislator also spoke at length about the importance of Vachana literature—the rhythmic writing style used by Basavanna and his contemporaries to spread social awareness. These verses, written in the common language of the people, served as a tool for mass education and enlightenment. Gowda called for greater preservation and study of these texts to ensure that future generations understand the cultural and moral roots of the region.
A Call for Unity
Concluding his address, the MLC stressed that honoring Basavanna goes beyond annual celebrations. He called for a collective commitment to social justice, urging citizens to dismantle existing social hierarchies and work toward a truly inclusive community. By following the path of the ‘Sharanas’ (devotees), Gowda believes society can overcome modern challenges of polarization and inequality.
