Dharwad, Karnataka — During the vibrant celebrations marking Basava Jayanthi, Karnataka Minister for Labor, Santosh Lad, delivered a poignant address emphasizing the universal relevance of the 12th-century philosopher and social reformer, Basavanna. Speaking at a public event dedicated to the saint-poet, the Minister asserted that Basavanna’s teachings transcend the boundaries of caste, religion, and geography, positioning him as a figure who belongs to the entirety of the human race.
The Universal Appeal of Sharana Philosophy
In his keynote address, Minister Lad highlighted that the core tenets of the Sharana movement—equality, dignity of labor (Kayaka), and selfless service (Dasoha)—are as relevant today as they were nine centuries ago. He noted that Basavanna did not merely preach to a specific community but sought to reform society as a whole by dismantling the rigid hierarchies of the time.
“Basavanna is not a leader confined to one particular sect or region,” Minister Lad stated. “His vision was for a world based on humanitarian values where every individual is treated with respect. His philosophy is a blueprint for universal brotherhood, making him a global icon for social justice.”
A Call to Internalize Teachings
The celebrations in Dharwad saw a massive gathering of devotees and followers who participated in processions and floral tributes. Minister Lad urged the youth and the general public to look beyond the ritualistic aspects of the festival and focus on internalizing the values of ‘Vachana’ literature. He argued that the true way to honor Basavanna is by practicing honesty in one’s profession and fostering a spirit of inclusivity in daily life.
The Minister further elaborated that the state government is committed to promoting the legacy of the Sharanas by incorporating their teachings into the educational curriculum and supporting cultural initiatives that spread the message of communal harmony. Local leaders and officials also joined in the festivities, which included the traditional garlanding of the Basavanna statue, symbolizing the state’s deep-rooted respect for the reformer.
Legacy of the Anubhava Mantapa
Reflecting on the historical significance of the Anubhava Mantapa (the Hall of Spiritual Experience), Lad described it as one of the world’s first democratic parliaments. He pointed out how Basavanna provided a platform for people from all walks of life—regardless of gender or social standing—to participate in intellectual and spiritual discourse. This spirit of grassroots democracy, the Minister concluded, remains a cornerstone of Indian cultural identity and continues to inspire modern social movements across the globe.
