The mass walkout, which began today, revolves around a contentious pension notification. The employees are demanding a return to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), which they argue provides better financial security compared to the current contributory system.
Government’s Firm Stance: MESMA and Financial Penalties
The state administration has responded to the industrial action with a series of stern warnings. Officials have officially invoked the “No Work, No Pay” rule, ensuring that any staff member participating in the walkout will face immediate salary deductions. More significantly, the government has threatened to use the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA), a legal provision that grants the state authority to demand workers return to their posts in sectors deemed vital to public welfare.
Authorities have emphasized that the strike could severely disrupt public services, including healthcare, education, and administrative functions. The administration maintains that while they are open to dialogue, the fiscal burden of reverting to the Old Pension Scheme would be unsustainable for the state’s budget.
