Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has addressed rising public concerns regarding the status of the Urdu language within the region’s administrative framework. Speaking on Monday, the Chief Minister dismissed rumors suggesting that the government intended to phase out Urdu from its revenue services, emphasizing that the language remains an integral part of the territory’s heritage and official proceedings.
Maintaining Linguistic Traditions in Governance
The clarification comes after social media speculation and various political circles questioned whether the current administration planned to replace Urdu with English or Hindi for maintaining land records and other revenue-related documentation. Abdullah reaffirmed that Urdu continues to hold its official status and that there are currently no proposals under consideration to alter its role in the revenue department.
For over a century, Urdu has served as the primary language for land records in Jammu and Kashmir. Most historical documents, including the Jamabandi (land records) and Girdawari (harvest inspections), are meticulously maintained in Urdu. Transitioning away from this system would not only pose a logistical challenge but also risk distancing the populace from their own legal and historical records.
Modernization Without Displacement
While the Chief Minister confirmed the persistence of Urdu, he also noted that the administration is committed to digital modernization. The ongoing digitization of land records aims to make information more accessible to the general public. However, Abdullah clarified that technological upgrades do not necessitate the erasure of the linguistic foundation upon which these records were built.
