Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has launched a sharp critique of the Central Government following the latest upward revision in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices. The Minister characterized the price hike as a direct assault on the financial stability of ordinary citizens and middle-class households already struggling with inflationary pressures.
“Price Hikes are Anti-People,” says Minister
In a strongly worded statement, Krishna Byre Gowda argued that the Union Government’s decision to increase the cost of essential cooking fuel demonstrates a lack of empathy for the common man. He noted that while the international market prices often fluctuate, the benefits of lower global oil prices are rarely passed down to the consumer, yet hikes are implemented with immediate effect.
The Minister highlighted that the rising cost of LPG cylinders is particularly devastating for rural households and women, many of whom were encouraged to switch from traditional firewood to gas under various schemes. “By making gas unaffordable, the government is essentially pushing people back toward unhealthy cooking methods,” he remarked during a media briefing.
Political Friction Over Fuel Costs
The criticism comes amidst a broader national debate regarding fuel taxation and subsidy management. Gowda emphasized that the persistent rise in energy costs acts as a catalyst for overall inflation, driving up the prices of essential commodities and logistical services. He called on the Centre to reconsider its fiscal policies and provide immediate relief to consumers through a reduction in central excise duties or the restoration of significant subsidies.

The Karnataka Minister also touched upon how these national-level price adjustments complicate state-level welfare initiatives.
