In a strong defense of India’s primary financial oversight body, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary asserted that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been revitalized under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration. Speaking at a recent event, Chaudhary dismissed allegations of political bias, stating that the agency’s primary directive is to eliminate corruption, which he likened to a “cancer” within the Indian economy.
Strengthening the Fight Against Financial Misconduct
Chaudhary emphasized that the ED’s recent surge in activity is a direct result of a policy shift aimed at ensuring fiscal transparency. According to the Minister, the government has empowered the agency with the necessary tools and autonomy to adjudicate complex financial crimes without external interference. He maintained that the ED does not operate with the intent to target individuals or political entities, but rather to follow the trail of illicit funds wherever they may lead.
The Minister highlighted that before the current administration took office, many high-profile financial discrepancies remained unaddressed. “The Prime Minister has empowered the ED specifically to cleanse the system of the cancer that is financial crime,” Chaudhary stated, reinforcing the narrative that the agency serves as a vital pillar in India’s journey toward a cleaner economy.
Global Recognition and Investigative Prowess
The Minister also pointed to the rising international reputation of the Enforcement Directorate. He noted that the agency is now “respected” on a global scale, particularly within influential multilateral organizations. Specifically, Chaudhary cited the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global watchdog for money laundering and terrorist financing, for its recognition of the ED’s investigative capabilities.
He argued that the positive feedback from international bodies serves as a testament to the agency’s professionalism and adherence to global standards. “The FATF has praised the investigative skills of our officers, which underscores that the ED’s work is grounded in technical excellence and rigorous evidence gathering,” Chaudhary added.
Addressing Criticism of Agency Overreach
Despite the government’s stance, the ED has faced consistent criticism from opposition parties who claim the agency is being weaponized against political rivals. Chaudhary refuted these claims, suggesting that the increase in seizures and arrests is simply a reflection of more efficient investigations and a zero-tolerance policy toward money laundering. By framing financial crime as a societal ailment, the Minister signaled that the government intends to maintain its current trajectory of aggressive enforcement actions.
