Western Railway and Central Railway are moving toward a major design shift: the introduction of automatic sliding doors on non-air-conditioned (non-AC) local trains. This initiative aims to address a critical safety concern that has plagued the city’s transit system for decades—the danger of open-door travel.
Addressing the Safety Crisis
For decades, the image of Mumbai locals has been synonymous with commuters hanging out of open doorways. While culturally iconic, this practice has lethal consequences. Statistics frequently highlight that a significant percentage of railway fatalities in Mumbai are caused by passengers falling from moving trains or hitting poles while leaning out. By installing automatic doors on regular, non-AC coaches, the railway authorities intend to physically prevent passengers from standing on the footboard, thereby drastically reducing the risk of accidental falls.
Design Challenges and Ventilation Concerns
While the safety benefits are clear, implementing automatic doors on non-AC trains presents unique engineering challenges. Unlike AC locals, which are sealed environments, non-AC coaches rely on natural airflow through windows and doors to keep temperatures manageable during Mumbai’s humid summers. Closing the doors while the train is in motion could lead to suffocation or extreme discomfort in packed compartments.
To counter this, the new designs are expected to feature enhanced forced ventilation systems. These systems will ensure that even when the doors are shut, fresh air is circulated throughout the coach, maintaining a breathable atmosphere for the hundreds of commuters squeezed into each rake during peak hours.
Improving Passenger Discipline
Beyond physical safety, the move is seen as a way to improve boarding discipline. Automatic doors will prevent commuters from attempting to board or deboard moving trains, a common cause of accidents at station platforms. The system will be synchronized with the train’s movement, ensuring that the rake does not leave the platform until all doors are securely locked.
Future of the Suburban Network
The introduction of these doors marks a transition period for the Mumbai suburban network. As the city slowly moves toward a fully air-conditioned fleet in the coming decades, these “semi-automated” non-AC trains serve as a crucial middle ground. They offer the enhanced safety features of modern rail travel without the higher fare structure associated with current AC local services, ensuring that safety remains accessible to the common commuter.
