Police in Bengaluru have apprehended two food delivery executives following allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation against a woman in the Yelahanka area. The incident, which took place late at night, has once again raised concerns regarding the safety of women and the vetting processes of app-based delivery services in the city.
Late-Night Encounter Leads to Police Action
The victim, a resident of Yelahanka, reported that the confrontation occurred when she was returning home. According to the police complaint, the two men, who were on a motorcycle, began tailing her and making lewd comments. When the woman confronted the individuals, the situation escalated as the suspects allegedly used abusive language and issued threats before fleeing the scene.
Following the harrowing experience, the woman immediately approached the local authorities to file a formal First Information Report (FIR). Utilizing local surveillance footage and digital tracking methods, the Yelahanka police were able to identify the suspects through their vehicle registration and delivery uniforms.
Suspects Identified as Delivery Professionals
The arrested individuals have been identified as employees of a prominent food delivery platform. Their identities were confirmed after police coordinated with the company to track their movements at the time of the incident. It is currently unclear whether the duo were actively fulfilling orders or were off-duty when the harassment occurred.
Rising Concerns Over Gig Economy Safety
This arrest underscores a growing debate in urban centers like Bengaluru regarding the accountability of “gig economy” platforms. While these services offer convenience, residents have increasingly called for stricter background checks and more robust safety protocols for personnel who navigate residential neighborhoods at all hours.
The Yelahanka police have booked the suspects under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanjita (BNS) pertaining to sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. They are currently in judicial custody as further investigations continue. A spokesperson for the police department stated that they are committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens and will take “strict legal action” against such predatory behavior.
The delivery company involved has reportedly suspended the accounts of the two executives pending the results of the legal investigation, stating they have a “zero-tolerance policy” toward such conduct.
