The incident occurred in the Asansol constituency, where Paul is currently contesting as a candidate, raising fresh concerns regarding the security measures in place during the polling process.
Violence Erupts Outside Polling Station
The attack took place as Agnimitra Paul was departing from a polling booth premises after completing a routine inspection of the voting progress. According to eyewitnesses and security personnel, a group of individuals began pelting the moving convoy with stones. The force of the impact was significant enough to shatter the rear windowpanes of the MLA’s vehicle.
While Paul escaped the encounter without physical injury, the psychological impact on the campaign was immediate. The BJP candidate was quick to condemn the act, categorizing it as a deliberate tactic to intimidate voters and disrupt the democratic process.
“Attempt to Influence the Election,” Says Paul
Speaking to the media shortly after the incident, a visibly shaken but defiant Paul expressed her conviction that the attack was premeditated. “Stones were thrown at my moving car as I was exiting a polling booth premises. The rear window was shattered,” she stated. “It is very clear who is behind this. This is an attempt to influence the election.”
The BJP leadership has frequently accused the state’s ruling party of utilizing “muscle power” to sway outcomes in sensitive zones. While Paul did not name a specific party in her immediate statement, the political implications were evident as her supporters gathered to protest the security lapse.
Heightened Security Concerns in Asansol
Asansol has historically been a flashpoint for political friction in West Bengal. This latest incident has prompted the Election Commission to seek a detailed report from local authorities. Following the attack, additional security forces were deployed to the area to prevent further escalations between rival party workers.
