Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the nation’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, has officially hit a historic production milestone, reaching an annual capacity of 23.4 lakh (2.34 million) units. This achievement marks a significant chapter in the company’s history as it reinforces its dominance in the domestic market while scaling up for global export opportunities.
Ambitious Expansion to 4 Million Units
Building on this momentum, the carmaker has unveiled a bold strategic roadmap aimed at nearly doubling its current output. Maruti Suzuki has confirmed plans to expand its total annual production capacity to an unprecedented 40 lakh (4 million) units by the end of the decade. This massive scaling operation is designed to meet the rising demand for personal mobility in India and to position the company as a key hub for Suzuki’s international supply chain.
The company currently operates high-output facilities across Gurugram and Manesar in Haryana, complemented by the production capabilities of Suzuki Motor Gujarat. To reach the new four-million-unit target, Maruti is investing heavily in new greenfield projects and upgrading existing infrastructure to handle a diverse portfolio of vehicles, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, and upcoming electric vehicle (EV) models.
Focus on New Technologies and Exports
This capacity boost is not just about volume; it represents a technological shift. A significant portion of the new capacity will be dedicated to the production of cleaner energy vehicles. Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) shortly, with plans to introduce multiple EV models by 2030.
Furthermore, the expansion aligns with the “Make in India” initiative, as the company aims to significantly increase its export volumes. By leveraging its increased capacity, Maruti Suzuki intends to ship more vehicles to markets across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, aiming for a export target of 7.5 lakh units annually by the 2030-31 fiscal year.
Market Outlook and Infrastructure
Industry analysts suggest that Maruti’s move is a preemptive strike against growing competition in the mid-size SUV and EV segments. By securing a 40-lakh unit capacity, MSIL ensures it can maintain its market share while reducing waiting periods for popular models. Construction at the new Kharkhoda facility in Haryana is already underway, which will play a pivotal role in achieving these lofty production goals.
