Bengaluru’s perennially congested Outer Ring Road (ORR) may finally see some relief at one of its most notorious bottlenecks. Tushar Giri Nath, the Chief Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has officially directed officials to initiate the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new flyover at the Iblur Junction.
Addressing a Major Traffic Bottleneck
The decision comes as part of a broader strategy to overhaul infrastructure along the ORR, a critical corridor that connects the city’s major IT hubs. Iblur Junction has long been a source of frustration for commuters, where traffic merging from Sarjapur Road and the HSR Layout creates significant gridlock during peak hours.
According to BBMP officials, the proposed flyover is intended to facilitate seamless movement for vehicles traveling toward Marathahalli and Silk Board. By elevating the flow of traffic at this intersection, the Palike aims to reduce the current waiting times, which often stretch to over twenty minutes during the morning and evening rushes.
Integration with Existing Transit Plans
The planning phase for the Iblur flyover will reportedly take into account existing and upcoming transit projects in the vicinity. With the Blue Line of the Namma Metro currently under construction along the same stretch, the BBMP must ensure that the flyover design does not conflict with metro pillars or future station accessibility.
Commissioner Giri Nath emphasized that the DPR must provide a comprehensive analysis of land acquisition requirements and utility shifting, which are often the primary causes of delay in Bengaluru’s infrastructure projects. “We are looking for a sustainable solution that complements the multi-modal transport vision for the city,” a senior civic official noted.
A Long-Standing Demand
Local residents and businesses in the Bellandur and Sarjapur areas have been vocal about the need for structural intervention at Iblur for years. Previous attempts to manage traffic through signaling changes and manual policing have yielded limited success. If the DPR is approved and funding is secured, the project will mark a significant investment in the city’s crumbling infrastructure, potentially transforming the daily commute for thousands of residents.
