Kozhikode District Congress Committee (DCC) President K. Praveenkumar has formally requested strict disciplinary measures against the returning officer for the Perambra constituency, alleging significant procedural lapses and suspicious activity during the ongoing electoral process. The demand comes amidst heightened political tension in the region as local leaders scrutinize the conduct of election officials.
Allegations of Misconduct in Perambra
Speaking to the media, Praveenkumar expressed grave concerns regarding the impartiality of the election machinery. According to the DCC President, the returning officer’s actions have been inconsistent with established protocols, prompting the Congress leadership to seek intervention from higher electoral authorities. While specific details of the alleged violations are being reviewed, the party maintains that the integrity of the democratic process in Perambra has been compromised.
Unscheduled Visit to JDT Islam Education Complex
Adding to the controversy, Praveenkumar claimed that the returning officer for Koyilandy, accompanied by several other government officials, made an unexpected visit to the JDT Islam Education Complex premises on Tuesday. This location is of particular significance during the election cycle, and the DCC leadership argues that such visits, if not part of a transparent and pre-announced schedule, raise serious questions about the motives of the administrators involved.
The Congress party has demanded a comprehensive investigation into why these officials were present at the complex and what transpired during their visit. “The presence of election officials at such sensitive locations without clear justification or prior notification to all stakeholders is a breach of trust,” a party spokesperson added.
Demands for Transparent Election Oversight
The DCC has called upon the State Election Commission to ensure that all officers adhere strictly to the guidelines to maintain a level playing field. Praveenkumar emphasized that any bias—whether perceived or actual—by returning officers could have long-standing repercussions on public confidence in the voting system. The party has indicated that it will escalate the matter if immediate action is not taken to rectify these grievances and ensure the neutrality of the administrative staff assigned to the Perambra and Koyilandy constituencies.
