K. Lakshminarayana Madhav, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State President for Andhra Pradesh, has issued a stern call to action regarding the state of waste management infrastructure. During a recent assessment of rural development, Madhav highlighted a concerning trend of “idle infrastructure” across various panchayats, noting that significant investments made through Central Finance Commission grants are currently going to waste due to negligence.
Infrastructure Left to Decay
According to the BJP leader, several villages across Andhra Pradesh have seen the construction of waste processing units, sheds, and collection centers funded by the Union Government. However, many of these facilities remain locked, non-functional, or poorly maintained. Madhav pointed out that while the Central Government has consistently released funds aimed at achieving the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), the local execution and upkeep have been severely lacking.
“It is disheartening to see public money, specifically designated for rural sanitation and hygiene, translated into structures that serve no purpose,” Madhav stated. He emphasized that the mere construction of buildings is insufficient; the success of the program depends on the active operation of these units to manage solid and liquid waste effectively.
The Impact on Rural Hygiene
The failure to utilize these facilities has direct consequences for the health and hygiene of rural populations. Without proper waste segregation and processing, many villages continue to struggle with open dumping and unsanitary conditions. The BJP State President urged the state administration and local panchayat officials to prioritize the maintenance of this infrastructure and ensure that the equipment provided is being used by trained personnel.
Call for Accountability
Madhav called for a comprehensive audit of all waste management projects funded by Central grants over the past few years. He suggested that local bodies must be held accountable for the operational status of these facilities. He further highlighted that the ‘double engine’ growth vision can only be realized when Central initiatives are implemented with integrity at the grassroots level.
The BJP leadership in the state plans to continue monitoring these developments, urging the State Government to release its share of matching grants and provide the necessary administrative support to make rural Andhra Pradesh garbage-free.
