In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity, South Central Railway (SCR) has announced that the Cocanada AC Express, operating between Kakinada Town and Lingampally, will transition from a periodic special to a daily permanent service. This decision comes in response to consistent demand from commuters traveling between the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and the bustling IT corridor of Hyderabad.
Meeting High Passenger Demand
The Kakinada Town-Lingampally-Kakinada Town route has long been one of the most frequented corridors for the SCR. Previously operating on a specific weekly schedule using special train numbers, the service often saw peak occupancy, leading to calls from passenger associations for more frequent operations. By upgrading this to a daily service, the railway aims to provide reliable, high-quality travel options for business professionals, students, and families.
Upgraded Features and Timings
The daily service is expected to feature a full air-conditioned rake, maintaining the premium experience associated with the ‘Cocanada’ brand. While the official schedule remains largely consistent with the previous special runs, the permanency allows for better long-term planning for travelers. The train typically departs Kakinada Town in the late evening, arriving at Lingampally—a key hub for Secunderabad and Hyderabad’s high-tech city—early the following morning.
Strategic Importance for Lingampally
The choice of Lingampally as the terminating station is strategic. By bypassing the often-congested Secunderabad Junction for its final stop, the service offers direct access to the western part of Hyderabad, where the majority of multinational corporations and residential townships are located. This saves passengers significant commuting time within the city.
Ticketing and Implementation
Railway authorities have integrated the daily schedule into the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). Commuters can now book tickets well in advance under the new permanent train numbers. SCR officials noted that the conversion to a daily service is part of a broader initiative to stabilize “popular specials” into regular timetable features, ensuring better resource management and passenger convenience.
