After a hiatus spanning four decades, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam has once again become home to the elusive and majestic black panther. The introduction of the melanistic leopard marks a significant milestone for the facility, which last housed the species in 1984.
Arrival from Assam State Zoo
The new resident, a young male black panther, arrived at the Vizag zoo as part of a strategic animal exchange program with the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati. The arrival has sparked excitement among zoo officials and wildlife enthusiasts alike, as the black panther is one of the most sought-after sightings in any zoological collection. Following its long journey, the animal was placed under a mandatory quarantine period to ensure its health and help it acclimatize to the coastal climate of Andhra Pradesh.
Enhancing Biodiversity and Public Interest
According to zoo authorities, the return of the black panther is expected to significantly boost footfall at IGZP. “The presence of a black panther adds a layer of mystery and beauty to our wildlife collection,” noted a senior official. The melanistic leopard, often referred to as a “ghost of the forest,” is not a separate species but a color variant of the Indian leopard, caused by a gene that produces an excess of dark pigment.
