Addressing a large-scale election rally in the Barjora region of Bankura district, Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee launched a stinging critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the central ruling party of failing to honor its electoral commitments. Banerjee positioned the TMC as the only reliable safeguard for the people of West Bengal, emphasizing that the state’s welfare initiatives are permanent fixtures of the administration.
“Promises Made, Promises Broken”
Banerjee focused his speech on the disparity between the BJP’s rhetoric and its execution. He argued that the saffron party has a consistent track record of making lofty promises during campaign cycles only to abandon them once the polls conclude. Contrasting this with the TMC’s governance model, he stated that the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government prioritizes direct benefit transfers and social security over political posturing.
The TMC leader specifically highlighted the “Lakshmir Bhandar” scheme, which provides financial assistance to women across the state. In a bid to reassure voters amid opposition criticism, he declared that these benefits are not temporary. “Women in Bengal will continue to receive benefits under the scheme for life,” Banerjee stated, asserting that no political shift would disrupt the flow of state-funded aid.
A Focus on Bankura’s Development
The rally in Bankura is part of a broader push by the TMC to reclaim ground in the western districts of the state. Banerjee reminded the audience of the various infrastructure and social welfare projects completed under the current state regime, framing the upcoming election as a choice between “Delhi’s neglect” and “Bengal’s progress.”
He further alleged that the BJP-led central government has been withholding funds rightful to West Bengal, particularly for rural housing and employment schemes. Banerjee claimed these tactics were designed to pressure the state’s residents but promised that the TMC would find alternative ways to ensure the people are not deprived of their rights. As the election fever intensifies, Banerjee’s emphasis on “guaranteed” welfare serves as a central pillar of the party’s campaign strategy to counter the BJP’s narrative.
